BACHELOR OF TRAVEL AND TOURISM MANAGEMENT (BTTM)

 INTRODUCTION

Tourism has become a major industry the last decades. The study of Tourism comprises the activities of persons traveling to and staying in places outside their usual environment for not more than one consecutive year for leisure, business and other purposes not related to the exercise of an activity remunerated from within the place visited. Tourism is different from travel. In order for tourism to happen, there must be a displacement: An individual has to travel, using any type of means of transportation (He or She might even travel on foot: nowadays, it is often the case for poorer societies, and happens even in more developed ones, and concerns pilgrims, hikers …). But all travel is not tourism.

CAREER PROSPECTS

 The Travel and Tourism sector is one of the fastest growing industry in Uganda and worldwide.   The sector is dynamic and continues to pose challenges with the ever changing needs, providing new opportunities in the market. Several Leisure and Hospitality facilities, such as Hotels and Leisure, and Recreation centers which are catered for by the graduates of Bachelor of Catering and Hotel Management and Bachelor of Leisure and Hospitality Management respectively. The Bachelor of Leisure and Hospitality Management graduates are trained to handle the management of leisure facilities like recreation centres, the MICE sector and customer service which is common to all.

The sector of Travel particularly the Airline Industry and the tour and travel agencies and the tourism sector continue to face the challenge of trained manpower to respond to the increasing growth and demand for the services therein. This has created need for Management training to address the industry’s specific needs.  The Bachelor of Travel and Tourism Management aims therefore to impart Management and entrepreneurial  skills  to create manpower that will fill the gap  of lack of manpower with management  skills to turn around the Travel and Tourism sector in Uganda.

BACHELOR OF CATERING AND HOTEL MANAGEMENT (BCHM)

INTRODUCTION

The Hospitality and Tourism sector is one of the fastest growing industry in Uganda and worldwide.  Many hospitality establishments are being constructed. The industry in Uganda is dynamic and continues to pose challenges with the ever changing needs, providing new opportunities in the market. The limited number of professionals in this field calls for the need to improve the existing programmes by adopting a new programme that is attractive to our customers and that meets the needs of the dynamic industry in the country.

The Bachelor of Catering and Hotel Management aims at imparting knowledge and skills for hotel, restaurant and catering businesses in Uganda and provides unique opportunities to develop students’ skills and to create academic paths specially tailored to their goals and interests.

CAREER PROSPECTS/OUTCOMES OF THE PROGRAMME

The programme will produce graduates who are Equipped   with modern, international, practical and theoretical skills in managing hotel and catering businesses. Tools and techniques which can enable students to plan, design and organize hotel and catering services and products at the local and international level will have been acquired. Lastly, specialized training in hotel and catering to meet the needs of the industry will be achieved.

BACHELOR OF LEISURE AND HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT (BLHM)

INTRODUCTION

Leisure and Hospitality play an increasingly important role in all our lives with more time and money being spent on them than ever before. In the past, Leisure and Hospitality now receives much attention from a growing number of organisations looking to diversify into this exciting and profitable market.

BLHM is a multi-disciplinary programme that draws on management and social science disciplines such as recreation. It is designed to develop knowledge and understanding of the significant elements of generic management and underpinned by research applied to areas of sport, leisure, hospitality, tourism and recreation.

Professional Industrial Training has been included to give the course a more vocational orientation towards leisure and hospitality.

CAREER PROSPECTS

The program focuses on giving the appropriate knowledge and tools for strategic management, planning and development, forecasting and fostering leadership. The program also leads to international management with an intercultural approach to underline the different management politics, strategies and cultures in the different parts of the world.

Career prospects within the industry are excellent for our graduates work in commercial and not-for-profit organizations such as hotels, pubs, bars, night-clubs, food distribution companies, restaurants and leisure facilities. Graduates also hold functional roles in personnel, marketing, research and consultancy. Other areas where graduates of the programme can apply their knowledge and skills include;
